Optimizing Big Data Workflows with Cloud Technologies
By Aymen ZAGHOUANI, Chief Executive Officer
The hidden cost of workflows nobody has optimized
Most cloud data platforms don't have a performance problem — they have a cost problem that shows up as a performance problem once someone finally looks at the bill. A cluster left running between jobs, a job re-reading the same table three times because three different steps needed it, a table stored as uncompressed CSV instead of Parquet — none of these break anything. They just make everything slower and more expensive than it needs to be, quietly, for years.
Where the easy wins actually are
File format: switching a frequently-queried table from CSV to Parquet typically cuts both storage size and query time by 60-80%, because Parquet is columnar and compressed — a query that needs 3 of 40 columns only reads those 3.
Autoscaling and spot instances: batch jobs that can tolerate occasional interruption (most can, with retry logic) run comfortably on spot/low-priority compute at 60-90% less cost than on-demand instances.
Caching intermediate results: if three downstream jobs all read the same curated table, computing it once and caching it (rather than recomputing per consumer) removes redundant work that scales with the number of consumers, not the size of the data.
A concrete before/after
A illustrative comparison from a typical nightly batch job, after applying the three changes above:
None of these changes touched the business logic of the pipeline — only how the same computation was stored and scheduled.
Orchestration matters as much as compute
A well-optimized job scheduled to overlap with three other jobs competing for the same cluster resources will still run slowly. Tools like Airflow or a cloud-native scheduler (ADF, Step Functions) let you express real dependencies between jobs, so downstream tasks start the moment their actual input is ready — rather than on a fixed clock schedule that assumes yesterday's runtime.
